With rock hard abs and his boyish charm, CJ Wright (Born: September 26) is getting noticed and he couldn't be more humble about it. CJ has been in the adult industry for just a little over three years, and in that time, he has taken the industry by storm and garnered a rather large fan base.
The 27-year-old performer barely put a foot inside of the industry, and he landed an exclusive one-year contract with West Coast Productions. CJ starred in some of WCP's most popular porn films and series, such as Booty Talk, My Baby Cheatin' & I Busted Dat Bitch!, and Azz And Mo Ass. He was also featured in Blackmaled, Black Submission and Girlfriend That's My Man.
CJ Wright's stint at WCP garnered him an adoring fan base that followed him as a free agent (after he left WCP) to his current status as an exclusive director for Justin Slayer International. Through JSI, CJ has released RED Hot Phat Girl, Body & Soul and CJ Wright's Overnight Success, among others. CJ has also done on-camera work for the production company.
CJ Wright has starred in features for some of the biggest porn companies in the adult industry. He's been featured in adult films for Black Ice, Anabolic Video, Video Team, Hustler Video, Vouyer Media, Penthouse, Playgirl, Wicked Pictures, Evil Angel, Depth Entertainment Family and Mercenary Pictures.
With a strong fan base that follows his every move, CJ Wright developed a website (CJWrightXXX.com) that caters his love of BBWs and to the BBW niche. The adult industry has gone so far as crowning the performer as the king of BBWs.
It has been a while since I first sat down for an exclusive interview with CJ Wright. I recently sat down with CJ to talk about his time as a free agent, his website, how he connected with Justin Slayer International and his directorial debut.
Papi Chulo: A lot has happened since we last spoke. Let's go back a bit and talk about when you were a free agent again. What was your experience like as a performer without an exclusive contract?
CJ Wright: I'm still a free agent as far as performing. But, as far as my product being distributed, it's only being distributed through Justin Slayer International. So, like, I'm exclusive as far as performing with BBWs. I mean, I don't do any type of BBW work for anyone else, period. Even before the JSI situation, once I came off contract as a performer with West Coast Productions, I kind of freelanced my way through the industry as an individual. It had its ups and downs. I do kind of consider myself as one of the better Black male performers. And you know, it's just sometimes... It's a bitter thing. Because... It's just I would see people I wouldn't consider being as good as me, getting more work sometimes. My experience as a freelancer, it's alright. It's cool. You learn a lot of lessons. You meet cool people. The bottom line is whether you're a free agent or under contract, you got to let people know the deal up front. No bull shit. No pussy-footing around. And once people get the picture, you are alright.
PC: How long have you been in the adult industry?
CJ: I want to say like three years and two months now. Something like that.
PC: How did you come up with your porn name?
CJ: we were just kind of joking around. "CJ Wright" is actually the guy off of one of the installments of Grand Theft Auto. I forget which one it is. He's one of the lead characters. We were just joking around and it stuck. And I took it. I just rolled with it 'cause the name "CJ Wright" is not a porn name. Some names are corny as fuck. I know it's porn, but still, the name is something I felt it could be associated with business and fun. You can actually see the name on a check, like a regular ass name. So, I was like fuck it, I'ma run with it.
PC: Shortly after you became a free agent you launched your official website, CJWrightXXX.com. Tell me a bit about what your fans can find on your website.
CJ: My website is for people who like BBW material. For the people who like plus-size material. They can see BBW material through my eyes. It's how I think it should be. I'm not saying my way is absolutely right. That's my website. It's my perception of BBW or what good BBW material is like, as far as costumes, hair, set ups and just raw feeling. I don't preferably say I have the best on the web. But, I like to think I have the most fun at what I'm doing. It's an extension of me. Everything we do is agreed upon between me and the girl. We just have a good time. It's the most un-porn type of porn. Know what I mean? Sometimes I do corny shit, but for the most part I try to keep it as real life as possible. It's just two people enjoying themselves, having sex and there just happens to be a camera in the room.
PC: How often do you update your website?
CJ: Actually, I go through phases with my website. I enjoy when members sign up and I'm happy when they sign up, but I never feel bad when members cancel. I never feel less valuable or rushed like, "Oh my god, they are canceling." I do not update as much as everyone else. I like to take my time. I just approach it differently. Sometimes I will update two or three times this month, then nothing the next month and five updates the following. It's fair to say I might update twice a month just to even it out.
PC: You have done a variety of work on the internet. Did you enjoy working with a particular site over another
CJ: Honestly I never really know which site it's for because 9 times out of 10, it's usually shot by the same circle of five different directors I know. I never know the name of the site. I just know the director, and trust the director, and go do the scene. As far as being on sites? It's cool. I know lately I have been cutting back. Not that I'm saturated or out too much. I'm just concentrating even more on myself. Like everyone else has a bunch of shit with me on it. And it's fine. I get paid to do it. But, it's time to concentrate on myself. I don't have a favorite site. I just show up and do the scenes. I don't even know the names of half the DVDs I've been on. (LOL)
PC: You have starred in a variety of scene types ranging from one-on-ones, threesomes to group sex. Is there a particular scene type you enjoy starring in the most?
CJ: One-on-ones. The one thing is I can concentrate on the girl the most. Maybe two-on-one, two girls and me, but I don't have enough of that. I don't too much care for the group shit now, 'cause I don't think every actor or actress is careful as they should be. We are already faced with enough risk as it is. Even though we have as many safeguards as possible to keep ourselves healthy, I just don't respect everybody's judgment when group sex is concerned. I've cut back on a lot of group scenes. Most likely I will not do them at all eventually. It just depends on the situation, the director and the people involved.
But, I care more about one-one-ones. And if it has to be a two-on-one, I would prefer it to be two girls and me. Or if it's a two-on-one with two guys and one chick, it would depend on the guy. Some guys I have a lot of respect for and I know we can knock out a good scene with the chick.
I mean porn is really getting young, as far as the mentality. A lot of young people just don't give a fuck. They treat it as such. And things get overlooked. Just the risk of it goes up a little more.
PC: What do you enjoy most about filming scenes?
CJ: To me like... Filming scenes is more than just filming a scene. Filming a scene means I don't have to go to a 9 to 5. Today I don't have a supervisor or a boss. It's my own idea. My own creativity. You know what I mean? Filming a scene to me, it's just so much more than the sex. It's breathing a sigh of relief. I'm fortunate as a motherfucker dude to just kick back and do things on my own time. And freedom. That shit means a lot to me dude. Even though I do wake up early, my alarm clock wakes up at 5:30 am, I don't have to be at work at 6am or 7am or a 9 to 5. I think about that shit. That whole process. If a fan really enjoys that scene, that motherfucker can relate to me. That motherfucker understands me. Or she does. That means a lot. You understand? Filming a scene to me is the ultimate thing. It's my money. I get to spend my own money and make my own money. It's just... I don't know... That's pretty much it.
PC: In a scene, which do you enjoy the most: oral, vaginal sex or anal sex
CJ: You know, I'm not the biggest fan of anal sex. I think... I'm not saying it's a nasty thing. i just don't see the enjoyment in women that I guess I need to see. I'm real emotional. Right? So, when I don't see a chick enjoying herself, it fucks with my ego and I will start struggling. If I don't see her enjoying herself... Anal sex is a dry type of feeling. Not literally. I mean, the atmosphere of the day. And maybe it might just be the chicks I've been paired with, or maybe me doing it wrong. A lot of the girls I've been paired with for anal, the momentum is real dry. A lot of the chicks do anal strictly for the money, not because of how it feels or if they like it. If you run into that, if you're a robot type of performer, you can go through that and it's nothing. But, if you're an emotional type of performer, it's different. When you're emotional, you pick up on everything. The smallest thing that the young lady is not having fun, it will fuck with me.
I like vaginal sex the most, the actual intercourse, 'cause that might be the best way to get into it and get off. Every chick doesn't always like sucking dick, but if it's vaginal, at least you have the chance to help her have an orgasm.
PC: What has been one of your most memorable shoots?
CJ: I think one of the last movies I did with Red. Her shoot was probably one of the most I remember. It sticks out the most, 'cause it was a five day shoot. She flew out here from her hometown and we just chilled. I tried to get the inside scoop of her own personal sexual fantasies. We had some ups and downs. It came out to be something people were interested in and liked, so I think that stands out. It was the first time trying something like that. Plus, it's already an uphill battle. Not everyone in porn respects BBW porn. And then to shoot it the type of way we shot it and put it on DVD? The format was totally un-porn. You know what I mean? We just kind of like followed her with the camera and did what we wanted to do. That will probably be one of my eyeopener scene. It was a long ass two to three hour scene just her, by herself.
PC: In a scene, where is your favorite place to shoot your load?
CJ: It depends on the chick. It varies. Wherever she might want it is cool.
PC: How long were you a free agent before Justin Slayer International offered you a distribution deal?
CJ: I got off my performer contract in the end of 2007. Like November 2007. That's when I got off my performer contract. And then I signed my contract with Slayer like about six months later. Something like that.
PC: How did you link up with Justin Slayer International?
CJ: Justin's partner HJ and I talked briefly at the 2007 AVNs. So, it was actually for the year of 2006, but it was January 2007. Me and him talked. Our first meeting we exchanged numbers and he gave me a call about a month or two later. And then we just kind of talked then. We didn't really have any specific plans for each other. He just wanted to see where my head was and wanted to show me some things on the business side of porn and their perspective. He knew I was under contract with West Coast Productions. He was like, "I've seen some of your work. Some was good, some was mediocre. Since you're new, that's to be expected." We kept in contact and by the time I was off contract, I had my site up and I had directed two movies for WCP. When I was on contract, I put those out. So, it was not that my name was gaining popularity, I had at least proven I could do things on my own with no backing and no one else's money. So, by now at least my name as a performer now carries a bit of
respect. So he said that, "I see that you're still staying consistent. If you want to talk, let's talk gain." And we talked again. Little did I know that they would have an opportunity like this. I was already doing my own thing and though that this deal would only add to what I was doing. We talked for like two weeks and then we said, "Let's go into business with each other."
PC: What made you want to sign with JSI?
CJ: It was just like a new beginning. I felt like honestly a distribution deal is like a totally different set of rules to play in that game. The website is one thing. It is what it is. It's not even like it's the most popular website out. My website is still like a small little hole. Fans come here and there. But, DVD is so different. That shit is like... The paperwork behind it. And deadlines behind it. And rules behind it. You have to fit your schedule into all these new different holes to complete this DVD project. And I'm like, "Fuck it! Why don't I give it a shot?"
I actually have a lot of respect for Slayer for what he did. I remember even before I came into the industry, Slayer was like the mold. If there was any example for one to follow, Slayer was that motherfucker. This dude was in shape, young, making a lot of money, fucking the women like crazy, but, he still did it a way that attracted the correct business. Even before I ever met him, or was in porn, I was like, "Damn that dude is really doing it." Just watching his DVDs, that's the motherfucker you watch and you try to beat that motherfucker. You know what I mean? He and I talked. We talked on a few different occasions a lot. Even on the shit we disagree on, we still have a mutual respect. With that, I felt like for me, it wouldn't do me wrong
to go in this contract, to learn another lesson in porn, and to make a good amount of money doing it.
And then, I was proud with him being Black. He's Black and doing his thing. And has a handful of Black directors. So, I looked at that with admiration. So, I just said, "Let's go for it."
PC: How long is your exclusive contract with JSI?
CJ: It's one year each time I sign. Every year after the first year, things get tweaked. A few percentages go up and down. Whatever. You know what I'm saying?
PC: Is the contract solely for directing?
CJ: Yeah. I'm not on contract as a performer. It's just my content and the stuff I produce is to be distributed only through Slayer.
PC: As a director and as a performer, have you ever been in a scene that wasn't going in the way you expected? How did you correct the situation?
CJ: Yeah man. I mean, both as a performer for other companies, I've been in situations. Usually if I'm in the situation with another company, if the scene isn't going good and it's my fault, even if we do complete the scene, I will decline my check that day. I won't accept it. If it's going bad, I will either totally decline it or have them take a few hundred bucks off and we will call it even. That's if I didn't cum or wasn't as
hard or was struggling the whole scene. If it's my fault.
Depending on the atmosphere, if it's the girl's fault... I had one situation where me and Mr. Marcus were doing a two-on-one with one chick. She's still in the industry. I won't say her name. We literally got to the absolute last, maybe like, five minutes, maybe seven minutes, of the scene, and she started crying and screaming, "You guys don't love me anymore" and "You don't care about me." She started going crazy. We were like, "Wow... Where is this coming from?" She jumped off the couch and got up and left, butt naked, out of there. What happened was that we got so far in the scene that they gave me a kill fee for that and rescheduled it. They won't ever be able to use that footage and I got my full rate. I understand shit happens. Even if it's porn, we are all human.
For my own porn, it's like I'm usually the only guy that works on my site. I do have other scenes with different guys, but for the most part, when things aren't going good, I just take a break. It's my shit. No one is in a hurry. They can't leave. I mean, they can leave, but shit, fuck it... We just hang out. I can always tell if things aren't going well for anyone else or when I'm not getting what I want to get. If she's not into it or uncomfortable, I can always tell when my body isn't acting right before the cameraman. We cut it. I get juice or water. Usually when that happens, I tell the cameraman to go downstairs and chill. I will interact with the chick until we get a good vibe and then I get the cameraman and we just start from where we left. But, I really do try. I try not to have any of those scenes, because nobody literally, even the richest motherfuckers in porn, can really afford bad product. So, it's like I prefer to like cut that shit and reschedule if I
have to, than having to put it out. Honestly, I have put out some scenes that in my opinion haven't been as good as my other ones. Sometimes I do that on my website. But, then I will let the people know on the message board: "What do you think of the scene? I don't think it's that good. But, what do you think?" Based on people's opinions, you just go from there. I never try to make as much of an issue of it.
PC: What was it like for you to hold your directorial debut in your hands for the first time?
CJ: It felt good. I was just like... It felt good. And then it also was like, "Man, what do we do next?" Like it's funny with DVDs. It's weird dude. In the end, it's like different. As happy as I was to hold that shit in my hand, I also was like in 30 days I have to have a new one. You know what I mean? I was like, "Oh shit!" Sometimes if you don't play your cards right, DVDs will take the fun out of it. You know what I mean? If you don't plan it right, or do things correctly, DVDs will almost make you feel like different. I was happy. I was like, "Yeah! Cool!" I got my thing going. My physical DVD. Physical cover on it with my name on it.
We were rocking and rolling. That shit was a good feeling. Also, I was like, you can't really stop.
PC: As a director, what do you feel you bring to the table for your fans?
CJ: Because I only direct BBW porn, I honestly, kind of, feel like I'm in a league of my own. When I say that, I don't mean I'm superior, I mean I'm in my own little corner, doing my own little thing. I don't know any other BBW producers. I don't talk to a whole bunch of other people who do BBW shit. I don't talk to a gang of webmasters or DVD producers. I have my own set, my own formula and I follow it for fans who watch BBW or watch my shit. They are into a certain quality. I never look at anyone's shit and say that's the standard. Who's to say that other dude's shit is even good? I'm sure people say the same about me. But, in my own heart, there is a standard whether his or mine, whatever, there is a standard that I try never to go below. A certain standard of quality in reality. You know, it's weird. It's weird, because a lot of people respect and enjoy amateur porn a lot. Because, there's so much reality to it, as far as real chemistry, real
sex, real fucking sex, not crazy ass moaning all out of place and extra loud... It's just two horny ass motherfuckers going at it hard. A lot respect it, but they still want the quality of professional porn. A lot want the two meshed together. If you can make that shit happen, then you're in the game. You have a standard that won't be touched by many others in porn.
Porn, as a whole, is either super fucking amateur or you're so professional, it's one big ass fake cookie-cutter porn set. It's so clean. It's a bunch of fake ass people. That's why I love my site so much, because I've got no guidelines dude. I could fuck for like two hours and throw that shit on tape and motherfuckers will jack off for two hours. I do the same on my DVDs now. I do have guidelines to follow. There's different laws for DVD. But, just period, no matter what I do, I think the average customer will at least say there's a certain intensity and quality always to be expected. Even with me being a new director. So it's like you just expect to know, I honestly in my honest opinion, for the people who have been following in the BBW community, when they pick up my DVD, they know no matter what the cover looks like, they know I'm gonna do something, some kind of intensity. It's not just going to be some bullshit. It's funny 'cause even the fans are comfortable to be like anything that they hold out of place, they can hold me accountable. They can say,
"What were you thinking with that?" It's all good.
PC: Thus far, what has been your most favorite project to work on?
CJ: It's funny. Like actually... It's weird. My favorite project, for so many different reasons, like... Body & Soul. That was like... I'm not saying it was my favorite just 'cause it was my favorite. It was my favorite because it's all-Black. Right now, in my opinion, this is just my opinion, so I hope I don't offend anyone. Even with this particular project, I can't honestly admit that I did like my best. But, Body & Soul was a Black-on-Black project. And it was an uphill fight, because I really wanted to outdo myself. And I wanted to outdo everyone else in porn so bad that I kind of like... failed. You know what I mean? When I watch Body & Soul, I don't get as excited as I thought I would have. And what happened was, I think I tried to bring that shit on as my baby. I wanted to display that shit. There are not that many Black BBWs in the industry that I have access to and can display in the best way. I wanted to make that Black-on-Black shit so hot, 'cause they are my sistas. I will take care of them so good. I wanted it to be my top movie, 'cause it's Black-on-Black. I want them to be raised to a new level and I tried to outdo myself so much that I actually failed. And I kind of like... It's funny, 'cause I came out of my own element.
It was still an acceptable movie. It still made the cut. But, for anyone who watches my other movies, and then watch Body and Soul, they will be like, "Damn! Everything else could be a 10, but Body & Soul was like a 7." I have had fans email me saying, "I like it." But to me, I'm like, "Are you serious?" 'Cause I think I overdid it and it wasn't that good. I think for me man, I wanted to make a statement so fucking bad that this Black-on-Black is hot, period. I'm not saying it was my favorite, 'cause it was that good. It was my favorite 'cause my intentions were in the right place. I wanted to rep for the Black-on-Black so bad and in my opinion, it just wasn't as good. I'm not
saying it wasn't as good 'cause of the women, it wasn't that good 'cause I didn't plan it right.
PC: So far you only shoot in Porn Valley. Do you see yourself taking your filming on the road in the future?
CJ: Not really. I mean, like eventually, yeah. But, it's not something that I'm planning to do. For me, I think I do just fine. Most of the chicks I hire, I fly them to me. It's easier. All of my resources are here in L.A. I don't care if a chick is in New York or Florida or wherever she might be. It's easier for me to fly her here. Once she's here, it's cool. To have a good produce, you don't have to go to different countries and shit. If there are ten girls in Brazil, there have to be at least three in California that I can work with.
PC: The industry seems to have accepted your love for BBWs. The adult industry has even gone as far as proclaiming you the "King of BBWs." How does hearing that make you feel?
CJ: I can't say that they have accepted it as much as they have said, "Let that motherfucker do what he wants to do." I mean it's not like they were going to stop me. Not one person would be like, "This won't work for you, so try this." I don't give a fuck what y'all thing. This is what I want. When fans email me and they are like, "I went to your website. It's not what I was looking for. When are you going to do some other things?" I respect what they say and I respect my fans for emailing me. I don't want to get too "Hollywood." But as far as being a performer, or artist, whether music, author or artist, you try to do what makes you feel right. And for me, I didn't come into BBW porn with a grudge. I didn't say, "I'm only gonna do this to show the rest of the world." Or say, "I told you so." I did the shit, 'cause this is what I like.
This is what I'm going to do and I'm going to make it look how I want it to look. When they pronounced me like that, I laughed in a receptive way, like it's cool. But, I physically can't say that I am the king, 'cause I don't have no where near as many DVDs as these other companies. I'm just starting. But, it's a good start and it's a good direction. I appreciate the respect I've gotten so far. The common law respect. And that's all that matters. Doing what you do, but doing it your way. People buy into it better and accept it better when it comes from you, as opposed to someone else telling you what to shoot. I'm happy the industry understands and respects me. Even if they had it, they respect me enough not to go that route with me.
They just let me do my thing.
PC: This brings us to the end of our interview. Is there anything you would like to say to your fans?
CJ: I just want to thank my fans for all their support.
