2010 Creative Arts Emmys Announced

The Creative Arts Emmys were held over the weekend. Betty White got her fifth Emmy, Ryan Seacrest got his first and Neil Patrick Harris got his first and second.

"The Man Your Man Could Smell Like" Old Spice Body Wash commercial starring Isaiah Mustafa won in the commercial category.

TBS, [adult swim] Pick Up The Cleveland Show

TBS and [adult swim] have picked up the syndication rights to FOX's The Cleveland Show for a fall 2013 launch.

Cleveland's sale to TBS and [adult swim] hardly comes as a surprise. TBS and [adult swim] already air Cleveland's parent sitcom, Family Guy.

Tyler Perry's "Furious" Over Boondocks Episode

Actor, director, playwright, screenwriter, producer and author Tyler Perry was furious at Turner Broadcasting about The Boondocks episode "Pause" that spoofed Perry and his Madea character. The episode ran on Cartoon Network's [adult swim] programming block. Cartoon Network and TBS (which runs Tyler Perry's House of Payne and Meet the Browns) are owned by Turner Broadcasting.

In "Pause", the episode's Ma Duke character was clearly Madea, and the Winston Jerome character was Perry. The story set him up as a closeted, cult-ish leader, who created the Ma Duke empire as a way to hide his cross-dressing lifestyle and solicit sex with men.

Per the Los Angeles Times:

Soon after the episode aired, Perry got in touch with executives at Turner including entertainment chief Steve Koonin and Phil Kent, the chief executive of Turner Broadcasting. Perry complained loudly about the episode and even threatened to rethink his relationship with the company, people familiar with the situation said. A spokesman for Perry declined to comment. Kent, who is a low-key executive but also a former talent agent, put his skills to work and acknowledged to Perry that the actor-producer should have been given a warning about the episode. The show, which has aired twice, is not scheduled to air again on Cartoon Network, although the company would not say if it has been banned from the channel.

Boondocks Skewers Tyler Perry and the Black Church

The latest episode of [adult swim]'s The Boondocks featured a sassy, gun-waving, bump-and-grinding Madea-ish character that ruled film, television and the stage (as well as the Bible-thumping crowd that adores the character and its creator). Titled "Pause", the episode's Ma Duke character was clearly Madea, and the Winston Jerome character was Tyler Perry.

Jerome's oeuvre was portrayed as poorly written and buffoonish. The story set him up as a closeted, cult-ish leader, who created the Ma Duke empire as a way to solicit sex with men.

In the episode, Grandpa gets cast in Jerome's new play ("Ma Duke Gets a Man"). During the process, he's asked to kiss Ma Duke on stage... then, Jerome straight out asks him sex.

Boondocks Comes to a Close

The Boondocks will end after airing its third season on Cartoon Network's [adult swim].

A total of fifteen episodes have been created for the third and final season.

One episode, "Kentucky Fried Flu", will more than likely undergo a title change, at the behest of [adult swim]'s legal team, before the episode airs.

The third season debuts on May 2, 2010.

37th Annual Annie Awards

Up was a big winner at the 37th Annual Annie Awards. The Disney-Pixar film was named Best Animated Film and Best Directing in a Feature.

Walt Disney Studios took home six Annies, including three for The Princess and the Frog and two for the holiday special Prep and Landing.

The Boondocks to Return in Spring 2010

Boondocks creator Aaron McGruder posted a tweet over the holidays that should excite all The Boondocks fans.

The third season to the fan favorite anime-ted series should premiere in early 2010, per the tweet.

Aaron McGruder (@aaron mcgruder): "Finally got an airdate for Season 3. Not sure if I'm allowed to put it out yet, so I'll just say you got about three months!"

The popular yet controversial comic strip-turned-cartoon premiered in 2005 on Cartoon Network. The second season aired in 2007.
