In the News :: HBO, ABC and ABC Family Lead in Gay Characters on Television

The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) has reported that HBO features the greatest number of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) characters on cable with a total of 10 for the 2010-11 television season. ABC is once again the leader of the broadcast networks with 11 LGBT characters out of 152 total series regular characters (7.2%). CBS is in last place with just one regular character. ABC Family and Showtime are near the top with seven regular LGBT characters each.

HBO's True Blood is the most inclusive show on television with six regular or recurring lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender characters.

The overall total of LGBT characters has increased to 3.9% on broadcast television. Of note: the total doesn't include a single Black character.

GLAAD breaks down the amount of racial diversity on scripted broadcast television series. NBC is in the lead with 32% of regular characters being people of color. ABC is in second with 26% and FOX (24%), CBS (18%) and The CW (10%) follow.

In the News :: The View Responds to GLAAD

ABC responded to GLAAD's plea that The View correct comments about HIV and AIDS made by co-host Sherri Shepherd and guest co-host D.L. Hughley made during its June 22, 2010 broadcast.

ABC issued this statement:

[D]uring a discussion about blood donation and the transmission of HIV/AIDS, a guest moderator on the show expressed his interpretation of data about one way the virus can be transmitted. The topic of HIV/AIDS has been raised many times over the show's 13 years, with many voices and opinions contributing to a conversation that we expect to continue as long as The View is on the air.

Cindi Craeger (GLAAD's director of national news): "This program reaches millions of viewers and ABC must ensure that its platforms are not used to perpetuate dangerous falsehoods that put our community in harm's way."

GLAAD called ABC's statement "evasive."

In the News :: Mainstream Media Covers GLAAD's Call to Action Over Misguided View on Black Men, Homosexuality and HIV

The mainstream entertainment press has finally picked up on GLAAD's call to action on ABC's The View. GLAAD purchased a full page ad in Variety blasting the daytime gabfest for its "Hot Topics" segment on June 22, 2010 where several erroneous and downright dangerous myths of Black gay and bisexual men were brought up during a discussion on the recent Food and Drug Administration ban on blood donations from gay and bisexual men. The false information was spread by guest moderator D.L. Hughley and co-host Sherri Shepherd.

D.L. Hughley: "When you look at the prevalence of HIV in the African American community, it's primarily young women who are getting it from men who are on the down low."

Sherri Shepherd: "It's so big in the Black community with women because they're having sex with men who have been having sex with men."

The Variety ad, cosigned by the Black AIDS Institute and the National Black Justice Coalition states: "The Centers for Disease Control has publicly disproven this myth. And since June 22, thousands of people have written to ABC, asking that The View provide correct information to viewers. Unfortunately, those requests have been greeted with silence from both ABC and The View."

In the News :: Jamie Gillis Passes Away

Porn legend Jamie Gillis passed away on Friday, February 19, 2010 to a battle with cancer in New York City. He was 66.

Gillis was afflicted by melanoma. He was diagnosed with the disease four to five months ago.

Gillis was cremated in a private ceremony.

Gillis was born in New York City. He appeared in over 470 adult features. He also directed several porn productions. A bisexual, he appeared in gay porn, but never engaged in sex with another man on film. He did appear in several scenes where he was penetrated by women using sex toys.
