Avatar Takes the Crown from Titanic

Avatar has bumped Titanic from the top spot. The sci-fi epic has become the highest-grossing film in domestic box office history. The film currently stands at $601.1 million.

Titanic can still claim a few titles. It's still the biggest PG-13 movie of all time and it has the most consecutive weekends at No. 1.

Titanic's reign as the top film in domestic box office history lasted about 12 years.

BOX OFFICE :: Avatar Sinks Titanic

Avatar hit the $1.29 billion mark at the international box office. The film passed Titanic's 1.24 billion record to set a new one. By Monday, Avatar will top Titanic's worldwide gross of $1.848 billion to become the biggest moneymaker of all-time.

Within a week or week-and-a-half, Avatar should should sink Titanic's final remaining record: all-time domestic champion.

Avatar grossed $36 million domestically from Friday-Sunday. It led the weekend box office for the sixth-straight weekend. It's domestic haul stands at $552.8 million. It will soon surpass Titanic's once unbeatable $600.8 million.

Legion opened in second place with $18.2 million, while The Tooth Fairy entered in fourth with $14.5 million.

Extraordinary Measures debuted in seventh place with $7 million.

Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel (eighth place, $6.5 million) topped $200 million domestically; It's Complicated (ninth place, $6.2 million) joined the $100 million club.

BOX OFFICE :: Avatar Becomes Second-Highest-Grossing Film Ever!

For the fourth-straight weekend, Avatar hailed as the top movie at the box office. The sci-fi epic's $48.5 million (down 30%) intake allowed it to overtake Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen as 2009's biggest moneymaker.

As of last week, Avatar became the second-highest-grossing film in history. With $1.14 billion worldwide (and counting), Avatar trounced 2003's The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King's $1.1 billion for the spot. The film is still a long $500 million away from matching the No. 1 movie of No. 1 movies (i.e. Titanic).

Titanic's all-time domestic record may be even safer than its worldwide one. Avatar's $429 overall domestic gross puts it $171 million away from Titanic's domestic record of $600 million.

Daybreakers debuted in fourth with a solid $15 million.

Sherlock Holmes (second place, $16.6 million) and Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel (third place, $16.3 million) didn't budge. Domestically, Squeakquel's at $178.2 million and Sherlock's at $165.2 million.

It's Complicated (fifth place, $11 million; $76.4 million overall) continues to pack theaters.

Avatar Becomes Third-Highest-Grossing Film Ever!

Avatar has become the third-biggest grossing film of all time. Its worldwide haul totals over $1.1 billion.

The film has sailed passed the $1.07 billion plundered by Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest.

Most of Avatar's money comes from overseas. It's brought in $731.2 million internationally, while it's grossed $367.5 million domestically.

Avatar is on the right track to dethrone The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, which brought in $1.12 billion in global ticket sales. But, should fall short of Titanic's record $1.84 billion.

BOX OFFICE :: Could Avatar Sink a Certain Ocean Liner?

Avatar took in another $68.3 million in its third weekend to once again top the box office. After just 17 days in theaters, Avatar has grossed $352.1 million domestically. Worldwide, it has blown past $1 billion. It currently stands as the fourth-biggest moneymaker ever.

The sci-fi epic only saw a minuscule 10% drop from Christmas weekend. It's third weekend gross is the biggest third weekend in the US box office ever. $66.4 million of Avatar's worldwide total is from IMAX theaters. Avatar is just $250 million shy of Titanic's all-time domestic gross.

Sherlock Holmes remained in second place with an additional gross of $38.4 million (a 41% drop; $140 million overall total). Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel squeaked in third with $36.6 million (a 25% drop; $157 million overall total. It's Complicated fell a bite-sized 15% to remain in fourth place ($18.7 million; $59.1 million overall). And in fifth place, The Blind Side actually improved over last week by 8% with $12.7 million ($209.1 million total). Sandra Bullock is now the only actress ever to have a film marketed with her name solely above the title (i.e. based on her star power alone, and not a franchise or tentpole picture) pass the $200 million mark in domestic gross.

The Princess and the Frog hopped up 11% with $10 million (seventh place, $86 million total).

BOX OFFICE :: No Shit, Sherlock—Avatar Reigns Supreme

The curious case of Sherlock Holmes versus the Avatar had the aging (and revamped) detective outwitting the CGI-ed behemoth. But only for a while.

Avatar ended up the biggest movie of the big box office Christmas weekend. The sci-fi epic took in an estimated $75 million from Friday-Sunday. The film dipped an incredibly slim 2% in its second weekend, bringing its 10-day domestic total to an impressive $212.3 million.

Sherlock Holmes finished second with $65.3 million from Friday-Sunday.

Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel (third place, $50.2 million) and It's Complicated (fourth place, $22.1 million) got in on the record-breaking holiday weekend as well.

The Chipmunks sequel edged Avatar on Wednesday; Sherlock Holmes edged Avatar on Friday. Avatar opened up a lead on both movies on Saturday and Sunday.

New Moon ($3 million) departed the Top 10 after a five-weekend stay and a huge $280.9 million domestic take.

With Christmas disappearing, Disney's A Christmas Carol ($1.4 million) went, exiting the Top 10 after seven weekends and $136 million.

The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus was, theater for theater, the weekend's highest-grossing movie, making $129,980 off four screens.

Disney's The Princess and the Frog dominated the weekend with a $25 million nationwide debut. The hand-drawn animated fairy tale proved to be a big hit with audiences. Cinemascore said moviegoers gave it an A. The film has grossed close to $28 million when you include its $2 million from its two-week limited engagement. Disney was able to bookend the Top 5 with A Christmas Carol. The motion capture film only fell 11% in its sixth week to $6.8 million.

The Blind Side dipped to second place with $15.5 million.

Invictus debuted in third place with $9.1 million.

New Moon slipped two places (from second to fourth) and grossed $8 million. It's overall haul stands at $267.4 million and counting.

Peter Jackson's The Lovely Bones grossed $116,000 at three theaters.

Up in the Air ($2.5 million) got closer to the Top 10, despite still playing at fewer than 100 theaters.

Planet 51 (2.3 million) was fell out of the Top 10 after three weekends, and after only grossing $37.2 million overall.

The Blind Side took in an estimated $20.4 million Friday-Sunday to finally overtake The Twilight Saga: New Moon for the top spot. New Moon dropped to second place with $15.7 million.

The Blind Side has grossed $130 million domestically. New Moon has taken in about $256 million domestically, and $570 million worldwide.

Brothers debuted in third place with $9.7 million.

The Twilight Saga: New Moon and The Blind Side led the best-ever Thanksgiving weekend at the box office. The Blind Side gave New Moon a run for the holiday box office. Blind Side's Friday-Sunday take was estimated at $40.1 million, while New Moon stayed in first place with $42.5 million. The Blind Side surged, with business up nearly 20%, while New Moon cooled, with ticket sales plunging 70%.

The Twilight sequel surpassed $200 million for its overall domestic box office gross with $230.7 million and counting. After two weekends, New Moon has grossed $473.7 million worldwide.

The Blind Side made more money in its second weekend than its first. The sports drama nearly matched New Moon at every turn over the long Thanksgiving holiday. From Wednesday-Sunday, New Moon grossed $66 million; The Blind Side was right behind it with $64.2 million. After two weekends, The Blind Side, produced for only $29 million, has grossed an estimated $100.3 million domestically.

The Twilight Saga: New Moon had the biggest November opening ever. It flew past Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire's $102.7 million debut. It was also had the biggest opening two-day gross ever ($115.9 million Friday-Saturday). It edged out The Dark Knight's $114.8 million start. The film even had the biggest opening day ever and biggest single day ever ($67.2 million) and the biggest midnight showing ever ($26.3 million).

Internationally, New Moon grossed $118.1 million, bringing its three-day worldwide haul to $258 million.

BOX OFFICE :: Wild Things Scares Up $32.5 Million

Where the Wild Things Are topped the weekend box office with a $32.5 million debut.

Law Abiding Citizen ($21.3 million) entered the box office race in second.

Paranormal Activity (third place, $20.2 million) had its biggest weekend yet. To date, the flick has scared up $33.7 million.

The Stepfather made $12.3 million for fifth place.

The Toy Story and Toy Story 2 3D: Double Feature was only supposed to play for two weeks?

Black Dynamite made $140,986 at 70 theaters.
